Still getting in the swing of it

First of all, I just want to say thanks for all the comments on my last post. Thank you for sticking around even when I didn't post the entire month of September. I'm working on it. Now back to your regular programming.

The transition to owning my place and living by myself has been a little weird.

First of all, there's the fact that I haven't actually been home for a whole weekend off more than twice since I moved over two months ago. So it's a little hard to feel settled.

Case in point: I've hung three things on the wall. (Who knew a nail hole would feel like such a commitment?!)

Also, I'm still getting used to organizing my life. I mean, I haven't had to deal with bills, groceries, etc. for quite a while. It's not that I'm doing any of it wrong, I just haven't found my groove yet.

Meal planning. What's that? For the longest time, the majority of my fridge was beer. Which isn't saying much because I had about eight bottles in there.

Finally, there's that whole living alone thing. Most of the time, it's pretty awesome. No need to be fully dressed and if the dishes aren't done right away, I'm only bugging myself. Add to that my fairly busy calendar, and I'm love it 99% of the time.

It's just that every once in a while I realize since it's been hours since I've had a conversation (except with myself, which obviously doesn't count). And it's kind of weird.

So any recommendations for meal planning for one? What are the best/worst parts of living alone for you?

  1. Get a dog :) --> you'll need to go outside more (more exercise) --> you'll meet other people with dogs --> you'll have more conversations with people other than yourself. Also, you'll be home more to do all that cooking and home decorating (I know it has its downside too). And if you get an adult dog, you can save yourself from housetraining him/her. Plus, the dog gets a new loving home. It's a win-win situation really :)

Sorry for putting such a dangerous idea in your head.

  3. I live alone as well and I have to be honest and say that I love it. As far as meal planning, let's just say my freezer is full of microwavables :)

  4. I absolutely LOVED living alone! I did it for a couple years when I first moved to Seattle after graduating from college and I really prefer it to having a roommate (that is, when I can afford it). But now that I'm married I have to live with a boy... blech! ;-)

Honestly I loved living alone because I could eat what I wanted without judgment. I'm not much of a cook, so sometimes I would just come home and eat a bowl of Cheerios for dinner! Other than that I like making a huge crockpot full of something (chili or whatever) and then portioning it out and putting it in the fridge/freezer for the week.

Have fun getting settled in, and remember there's no rush!

  5. I am hopeful to move out on my own in another year and I am SO looking forward to it, but also a little worried about being lonely! I love being alone and by myself, but I imagine it can get lonely! Hopefully, you'll get used to it soon enough. :)

  6. I've never lived alone. I bet it gets lonely at times. Get a pet, it might help.

Meal planning is not my favorite thing to do, but I guess you can make a big batch of something over the weekend, and portion it out into smaller containers and freeze. It's really helpful of you had a long day and starving, but don't wanna go out to eat.
Wishing you all the best settling in! :)

  7. I've actually never lived alone either. Huh. But we do have a dog (or two!) you can borrow (or have?) if you need a roommate.

  8. I really love living alone. My meals are whatever I want them to be (candy? yogurt? crackers?) and I can leave my mess wherever I want and for however long I want. And the thermostat is in MY CONTROL. Yessss

  9. I just started living alone (again) for teh first time in 5 years, and I LOVE it! I agree it can be lonely sometimes, but usually I don't feel that way. I am loving the independence. But I know what you mean about committing to a hole in the wall- that's why I haven't hung anything yet! As for meal planning, I usually scan the grocery circular, find what's on sale and see what I have, and meal plan from there. Pinterest also helps- good luck!
